Students of Rainbow College, Asese Maba in Ogun State, were immersed in full glory of sporting excellence, as they set the tracks alight at the 23rd inter-house sports competition of the school which was held on Saturday, January 25 at the school’s premises.

With most of the events concluded before the final day, the inter-house sports didn’t lack the buzz of a sporting atmosphere as the students competed for medals in 10  events including march past, 100m, 200m, 400m, relay races and tug of war to the delight of their parents and guests.

Principal of the school, Olufemi Oguntuase reiterated Rainbow College’s penchant for excellence even beyond the classroom.

“At Rainbow College, we train the children not only in academics but the total development of the child. During this programme, we have brought an ex-international Mutiu Adepoju and they could see his humility. So, we want to train children that will compete favourably in life and even represent the country well in sporting activities and also excel in their careers,” the principal said.

At the end of a keen contest between the four houses, the Yellow House were crowned champions, followed by the Red House, Blue House and Green House in that order.

The school’s sports prefect, Gholahan Babatunde-Ojo, was a standout performer at the event, winning multiple gold medals and one bronze.

“I’ve been at Rainbow College for six years and I can say this is one of the most competitive inter-house sports that we have had. For me, doing sports is about passion and determination to be the best and I’m glad Rainbow College gives us the platform. So, I am looking forward to a sporting career in the future either in basketball, football or even athletics,” he said.

Some of the parents including the chairman of the Kwara State Volleyball Association, Kayode Bankole, as well as the chairman of the inter-house sports, Desmond Babatunde-Ojo, charged the students to imbibe the spirit of sports in their endeavours.

“Sports is one of the areas where you will meet people you might naturally not meet and this is one of the easiest ways to encourage children to get involved. Doing this will make them know Rome was not built in a day; there is no barrier when you get involved in sports,” Bankole said.

“Sports is very important in the lives of children and adults because it keeps you healthy and competitive. When you have the spirit of healthy competition, it even pushes you to achieve more in other endeavours and I see the children are trying to put in their best as well.”

Other highlights of the inter-house sports competition include the school’s invitation relay where Redeemer High School, Camp Ground stole the show in the boys and girls event; staff race and parents race.
