Remo Stars coach Daniel Ogunmodede has admitted that the club still have a mountain to climb to reach the next preliminary round of this season’s CAF Champions League despite winning 2-1 against AS FAR of Morocco in the first leg on Sunday in Ikenne, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.
Captain Junior Nduka and defender Sadiq Ismail were the goal scorers for Ogunmodede’s side in the high-octane encounter with the Super Eagles defender, Ismail, turning up with a super flying header for the winning goal.
He also assisted Nduka for Remo’s opening goal in the first half before they were pegged back immediately after the restart by the visitors.
They now face the herculean task of getting at least a draw in the second leg, which comes up in Rabat on Sunday, and the coach is aware of what they need to progress on.
“We are happy that we got the win as much as we know that conceding a goal makes the second leg a bit difficult for us,” Ogunmodede said during the post-match interview.
“First, we have to be clinical. We want to go to Morocco to score and win as well. We had some chances we should have buried here, but we didn’t bury them.
One thing we would like to work on is our attack and our moment in transition too. We came back slowly in defending in this game, and it almost cost us.”
He also reminded his players during a post-match talk that the job is not done yet.
“We have not won. We need to keep our heads above water. We have a bigger challenge now. We must not be carried away,” Ogunmodede sounded the warning to his players.
Remo are playing in the preliminary stages of the CAF Champions League for the third consecutive time and failed to reach the group stages in their previous two attempts.
In 2022, they were eliminated by AS FAR, who beat them 1-0 in Ikenne after a 1-1 draw in Morocco.
