Rear Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas (retd.), who was appointed six months ago as Sole Administrator of Rivers State, has formally transferred authority back to Governor Siminalayi Fubara following the lifting of emergency rule in the state.

Ibas was appointed in March by President Bola Tinubu to oversee the state after prolonged political tensions disrupted governance and threatened security.

During his stewardship, he oversaw the conduct of local government elections, reconstituted statutory boards, and ensured the passage of the state budget by the National Assembly.

Speaking at the handover ceremony, Ibas said the period of interim administration had restored stability and offered valuable lessons for Nigeria’s democratic process.

He noted that unchecked rivalry among political actors and the misuse of power could weaken institutions and undermine public trust, urging leaders to prioritize dialogue and institutional integrity.

He expressed appreciation to President Tinubu for the confidence placed in him, commended security agencies for sustaining order, and acknowledged the resilience of Rivers people throughout the period of uncertainty.

As he handed power back to Governor Fubara, Ibas appealed to residents to work with the administration for progress, stressing that effective governance depends on cooperation between leaders and citizens.

President Tinubu had earlier announced the termination of the state of emergency, clearing the path for the return of full democratic governance in Rivers.

The conclusion of Ibas’s assignment marks the closure of a transitional phase designed to stabilize one of Nigeria’s most politically sensitive states.
