The Rivers State University Teaching Hospital chapter of the Association of Resident Doctors has urged the state government to develop a housing scheme or policy to address their accommodation challenges.
The association said affordable housing options will improve the quality of life of their members, enhance productivity and commitment to providing quality healthcare services.
This was part of a communiqué issued at the end the association’s 2024 Annual General Meeting, held in Port Harcourt.
The communiqué was signed by the outgoing President of RSUTH ARD, Dr Nimi Ngo Briggs, and made available to newsmen.
The RSUTH ARD, emphasized the need for targeted programmes that would ensure that medical professionals have access to decent and affordable housing, given the challenges posed by their demanding work schedules and the rising cost of living.
It partly reads, “Government should support vehicle procurement for resident doctors to facilitate transportation during emergencies, particularly amidst the current economic challenges.
“Givernment should also introduce international training exchange programmes to expose resident doctors to advanced global medical practices.
“We call for the domestication of the Medical Residency Training Act passed by by the Rivers State House of Assembly, as its implementation would improve the quality and standards of medical training.
“Develop a housing scheme to provide proximity to the hospital, enhance comfort and reduce brain drain.
“Ensure consistent payment of grants to resident doctors for optimal training outcomes.”
The ARD said it will continue to ensure the holistic wellbeing of resident doctors by advocating for fair remuneration, improved working conditions and professional growth opportunities.
The resident doctors commended the governor of the state, Siminalayi Fubara, for the recent employment of new resident doctors and other staff of the Rivers State University Teaching Hospital.

The new leadership pledged to advocate for improved welfare and better working conditions for RSUTH resident doctors.
