As part of efforts toward promoting the non-oil sector, the Nigerian Shippers’ Council has revealed plans to expedite actions for the completion of vehicle transit areas across the inland dry ports.
In a release stated that the Executive Secretary of the NSC, Akutah Ukeyima, disclosed this during a familiarisation visit to Isiala Ngwa Inland Dry Port in Abia State.
He said that the move was in line with promoting seamless exportation of cargoes from the dry ports or hinterland to the seaports.
Ukeyima added that the council had commenced facilitating the development of VTAs, which would add value to export business, particularly the movement of export products.
The NSC boss noted that the Federal Government had also given marching orders for the port economic regulator to expedite action on the completion of dry port projects at designated locations across the country.
He assured the trading public that the council was determined to promote made-in-Nigeria products.
“The importance of Aba in the exportation of leathers and other allied products cannot be overlooked in the country. The Federal Government is committed to promoting exports,” Ukeyima said.
He affirmed the NSC’s readiness to support traders and shippers in Aba for their participation in the Africa Continental Free Trade Area.
Ukeyima stressed the renewed commitment to the development of the project, promising to follow up with the Abia State Government for the project’s development.
The NSC boss also led the management team on a facility tour of the ongoing office project in Aba.
Vehicle Transit Areas are public rest areas located off the highway, designed to provide temporary rest locations for truck drivers and other service providers within a designated community.
