THIS is the shocking moment a man covered in blood plunged head-first into the North Pool at the 9/11 memorial in New York in front of horrified onlookers.
The 33-year-old was filmed after hurling himself into one of the two-tiered pools before slipping down into the 20ft “central void”.
Chilling footage posted to X, formerly known as Twitter, shows the man slowly walking toward the open space in the centre of the reflecting pool.
As he reaches the edge, he lays down on his stomach in the 18-inch-deep waters of the pool’s central basin and dangles his arms over the edge.
The man can then be seen peering over into the open black hole while using his legs to push his body further through the water and up to the edge.
The jumper had already sustained an injury after throwing himself 30ft into the basin of the memorial as footage showed an oozing gash on his head.
Horrified onlookers watched on as his torso slid over the pool before he fell head-first into the lower part of the memorial, leaving behind a patch of bloody water.
Witnesses were left stunned as the man dropped a staggering 20ft into the central basin.
The NYPD responded to the World Trade Centre site in Lower Manhattan at around 1:30pm after a Port Authority cop spotted the man throw himself into the memorial pool.
The Fire Department quickly rushed to rescue the man from the fall into the central drop which he miraculously survived.
He reportedly told one of the officers he “did this for his father” before being dashed to Bellevue Hospital, complaining of “back pain” and suffering from an injured leg.
According to reports the unnamed man who is currently pending criminal charges, was taken into custody.
It was not immediately made clear why the man decided to make the jump into the 9/11 memorial pool.
The pair of reflecting pools at the memorial site marks the former bases of the two Twin Towers before they were destroyed during the September 11, 2001, terror attacks.
The pools are also a display of honour for those who lost their lives during the attack.
Both of the memorial pools have a 30ft waterfall, with the water pouring down into an acre-size basin that flows into a smaller opening in the centre that drops another 20ft.
According to reports, this is not the first time an attempt to jump in the memorial pools has been made.
A potential jumper was allegedly talked down off the ledge at the South Pool last month.
And last year, another individual plunged into the North Pool, although details of that incident were not immediately available.
Police have previously raised concerns over the issue of members of the public deliberately throwing themselves into the memorial pools.
Former Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly said they had to consider the “possibilities” someone might try to take their life in the pool.
Grief experts also reportedly claimed the memorial could set off a “negative psychological reaction”, especially those who have a direct connection to the 9/11 atrocities.
