Two road crashes that occurred on the Lagos-Ibadan and Lagos-Abeokuta expressways on Sunday and Monday left six people dead while three others sustained varying degrees of injuries.

PUNCH Metro learnt in separate updates from the Ogun State Police Public Relations Officer, Omolola Odutola, and the Commandant General of the Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency, Seni Ogunyemi, that the accidents were caused by drivers’ loss of control and fatigue.

According to Odutola, the accident on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway occurred on Monday after the driver of a Mercedes Benz lost control and crashed into a culvert along the expressway.

Odutola said the impact of the collision caused the vehicle to flip over into the second lane, causing five passengers to die on the spot while one person sustained an injury.

She said, “The accident took place as the driver was heading towards Mowe. Upon reaching the FATGBEMS bus stop by Longbridge, the driver suddenly lost control of the vehicle, crashed into the culvert, and flipped over, landing in the opposite direction.

“As a result, three male and two female adults inside the SUV were confirmed dead, and one passenger sustained injuries. The roof of the vehicle was completely torn off.

“Traffic police promptly arrived at the scene. Photographs were taken, and the injured individual was transported to AZ Carezone Hospital in Magboro for medical treatment. Meanwhile, the bodies of the deceased were taken to Real Divine Hospital in Ibafo for preservation.”

Odutola, who commiserated with the families of the deceased victims, urged road users to always exercise caution.

In a traffic update by the TRACE boss, obtained by our correspondent on Monday, one person lost his life along the Owode-Ijako area of the Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway on Sunday while two others were injured.

Ogunyemi noted that the driver of a Mazda bus had slept off while driving leading to a head collision with another granite-laden vehicle.

The impact of the collision reportedly led to the death of one person while two others were injured.

“According to eyewitnesses, the Mazda bus driver slept behind the wheel, veered off its lane and had a head collision with the granite truck on its lane in the process.

“Four adult males were involved, two adult males were injured while one adult male died.

“The accident victims and the presumed dead were rescued to Royal Hospital Ifo before our arrival, and TRACE operatives strategically positioned to monitor traffic control,” Ogunyemi stated.
