Executives within Nigeria’s telecom sector have lent their support to the newly introduced National Broadband Alliance for Nigeria, a strategic policy initiative aimed at bringing internet connectivity to 28 million people currently residing in underserved and unserved regions.

Unveiled last week by the Federal Ministry of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy in collaboration with the Nigerian Communications Commission, the initiative seeks to bridge the digital divide and expand broadband access nationwide.

According to the Universal Service Provision Fund, these 28 million Nigerians currently lack reliable telecom services, underscoring the urgent need for such a comprehensive solution.

In a statement following the launch, Director of Equinix West Africa, Wole Abu, lauded the initiative, describing it as a pivotal moment in Nigeria’s journey toward digital transformation.

He said, “I had the privilege of attending the landmark launch of the National Broadband Alliance for Nigeria,” Abu remarked.

“This transformative initiative is set to reshape Nigeria’s digital future, positioning the country as a leader in the global digital economy.”

Abu also emphasised the ambitious goals underpinning the initiative, pointing out that while broadband penetration in the country currently stands at 42 per cent, the new programme is targeting a remarkable 70 per cent by 2024.

“The roadmap outlined will not only expand internet access but also drive sustainable economic growth and social inclusion across the country,” he added.

As the country seeks to modernise its infrastructure and meet the demands of an increasingly digital world, the National Broadband Alliance is poised to play a crucial role in Nigeria’s digital evolution.

The director stressed the importance of practical solutions and collaboration in overcoming Nigeria’s digital divide.

“What struck me most was the emphasis on partnership and practical solutions. The approval of an SPV to deliver 90,000 km of fibre infrastructure demonstrates our serious commitment to action,” Abu said.

He further emphasised that it’s not just about laying cables but transforming lives, with key takeaways being the potential to unlock previously underutilised infrastructure.

The NBAN seeks to tackle limited internet access by aggregating broadband demand from key sectors—including schools, hospitals, markets, and religious centres—to create a sustainable business model that drives adoption and lowers service costs.

Pilot states, including Edo, Ogun, Kwara, Katsina, Imo, Abia, Borno, and Nasarawa, have been identified for early implementation, with incentives planned to attract private sector participation.

However, challenges remain, including multiple taxation, infrastructure vandalism, and concerns around commercial viability.

The Managing Director of Nigerian Communications Satellite Systems, Jane Egerton-Idehen, expressed her optimism about the initiative’s potential.

“Motivated and energised to deliver is all I can say as I reflect on my 100 days as CEO at Nigcomsat,” Egerton-Idehen said, acknowledging the importance of collaboration among stakeholders.

Egerton-Idehen reiterated the determination of NIGCOMSAT to reposition itself in the satellite industry. “NIGCOMSAT’s commitment to space technology advancement, innovation, and a brighter future for the region is unwavering,” she stated.
