WBF International Super-Flyweight champion, Aina Abbey, suffered her first career defeat to IBO Intercontinental and WBC Youth world Bantamweight champion French Jeyssa Marcel on Friday at the Zenith Metropole in Nantes, Loire-Atlantique, France, PRIMANEWS Sports Extra reports.
Frenchwoman Marcel handed Abbey a majority decision defeat after eight rounds of their female bantamweight contest fight.
It was a contest of unbeaten fighters with the Nigerian entering the ring with a perfect record of 11 wins and nine KOs but now holds a career record of 11-0-1 following the loss.
22-year-old Marcel has now increased her unbeaten run to 13 wins with two career KO victories.
The 27-year-old was expecting a tough bout against her younger opponent as she had told PRIMANEWS Sports Extra before the bout, “It is a tough fight because she is number one in her country in our weight category and I am going to fight her there.”
Following the loss, Abbey has expressed unhappiness with the result and believes she was cheated in the contest.
“I was not happy with the result because they used home advantage for her, despite the fact that the girl (Marcel) is bigger than me. In the weigh in, the girl weighed 52.88kg and I was 50.8kg
“They called for this fight just three weeks ago and she has been in camp for over two months working on her weight, which she dropped from 59kg to 52.88kg. I think that I should have won the fight,” she told PRIMANEWS Sports Extra.
However, Abbey is still focused on her goal of being a world champion saying, “I know I feel cheated but all the same life goes on, I will never relent until I became world champion.”
