As the current economic hardship continues to take a toll on Nigerians, the government at all levels has been urged to put machineries in place to address food insecurity.
A non-governmental organisation, The Oluwaseye Yomi-Sholoye Foundation, in a statement on Thursday, said the development would help millions of Nigerians to experience relief from the biting effects of the economic downturn.
The Founder, Dr Yomi-Sholoye, charged the government to urgently address hunger in society occasioned by rising inflation.
She advocated more military actions to end insecurity in some states in the country, “so that farmers can be free to farm and harvest their produce for Nigerians.”
Yomi-Sholoye noted that the current high inflation, which is negatively affecting the Nigerian masses, was primarily caused by insecurity in the affected states.
She beckoned on state governors to do more in alleviating the economic hardship many Nigerian families are enduring.
“I call on governments to do more to address hunger, insecurity and food shortage in our nation,” she said.
“This time last year, we marked my birthday with families and friends, but this year, I thought it different to celebrate with children in orphanages, the destitute and those who can barely feed due to the hardship in Nigeria today,” she added.
She explained that the idea behind the Feeding Thousands initiative to mark her birthday was borne out of the present hardship in the country and came to the aid of the less privileged in society.
She said, “I call on government to do more to address hunger, insecurity and food shortage in our nation. I appreciate what some governors like Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State and his counterpart in Borno State, Prof Babagana Zulum are doing to ameliorate the economic hardships Nigerian citizens are going through in their states. I want to call on others to follow in their footsteps by carrying out similar programmes in their respective states at this critical time.”
She called on the well-to-do Nigerians to lend a helping hand to the vulnerable and the less privileged who are in dire need thereby assisting the government to rescue many downtrodden citizens.
Locations where operation feed the thousands were carried out include Motherless Babies Home, Lion Village, Lekki Phase 1; Itedo Market, Lekki, Lagos; Motherless Babies Home, Makoko, Lagos; Okobaba Home of Destitute, Lagos; Faith Mission Babatunde, Olodi Apapa, Ajegunle, Lagos; and Faith Mission, Satellite, Close 16 Bridge, Satellite Town, Lagos.
The foundation also prides itself in giving scholarships to students, job creation, and community development among others.
