A BRITISH dad is feared to be dead after being carried away by huge waves as he tried to save his son on a paradise island of Mauritius.

The 49-year-old was attempting to rescue his 15-year-old son from the crushing waves in the Pomponette lagoon on the south coast of the island.

The heroic father rushed to help his teenage child but ended up vanishing under the water.

By the time the rescue team arrived to retrieve the boy at 10.15am local time on a Saturday, the dad was nowhere to be seen.

While the lifeguards succeeded in rescuing his son, they failed to locate the man for two days.

With the British national still missing, there are growing fears that he might be dead.

The police launched an extensive search effort with the help of the national coast guard and a police helicopter.

The man, his partner and his son arrived at the idyllic island on Friday, March 22 for a week-long family holiday ahead of Easter.

The local weather report had predicted a storm heading to the area over the weekend which potentially caused the huge waves that dragged the man and his son out to sea.

The forecast warned of heavy gusts and potentially three-meter waves on Friday, and a heavy swell warning was issued on Sunday in case the storm made landfall on the island.

A spokesperson for the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office said: “We are supporting the family of a British man who has died in Mauritius and are in contact with the local authorities.”

This comes just a day after a Brit tourist has drowned in front of his wife while swimming off a beach in India.

The man, 72, died on Friday evening at Talpona beach in Canacona, in the western state of Goa.

Police said he was carried away by a strong current after going for a swim with his wife, who had to watch in horror as a lifeguard attempted to revive her husband to no avail.

The pair raised the alarm as they slid into the water, and lifeguards rescued them both on jet skis.

Both were given CPR, and while his wife was able to be revived, the British man was pronounced dead after being transported to a nearby hospital.

The married couple were regular visitors in Goa and were on holiday for 15 days before the husband’s death, cops said.

Another British national has plunged to death after slipping from a bridge into the water and fatally hitting his head in Australia.

The man, said to be in his 30s, was reportedly part of a tourist group visiting the Noosa Sound Bridge in Queensland.

The unnamed man was reportedly taking turns jumping from the notorious bridge – a spot where police have repeatedly asked people not to jump from.

He even completed one jump and returned to the bridge for a second attempt.

Unfortunately, this time he lost his balance while crossing the railing and struck his head while falling down into the waters.

After he failed to get out of the water, his friends started a frantic search before contacting the emergency rescue services at 1am.

After searching for some six hours, the police were able to recover his body using sonar assistance.
