(AA) – Egyptian security forces have thwarted an attempt to blow up two car-bombs at a security checkpoint in the northern quadrant of the Sinai Peninsula.

“Six people – two policemen and four injured – were injured by shrapnel,” a medical source told The Anadolu Agency.

He described the injuries as “slight”.

A security source said that security forces had detonated the two cars before being blown up near the Sheik Zuweid police station.

Egypt has been cracking down on militancy in Sinai, which shares borders with Israel and the Gaza Strip, for more than a year now amid a rise in militant attacks against army and security forces.

Last month, scores of people were killed and injured in a spate of militant attacks on security sites in Sinai. The attacks were later claimed by Ansar Beit al-Maqdis group, which swore allegiance to the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL).
