Liverpool are favourites to reach the semi-finals of the Champions League for the first time since 2008.

Much has changed at the club during the past ten years but the Reds are now turning back the clock.

A Champions League semi-final awaits Jurgen Klopp and his side, with just Manchester City standing in their way now.

Liverpool head to the Etihad with a 3-0 aggregate lead and are firm favourites to progress. If the Reds score one goal in normal time, City would need to score five without reply.

The odds are stacked in the visitors’ favour, but there is one cause for concern.

This is a record over ten games which stretches back to 1971, when Liverpool first faced Leeds in the 1970/71 Inter-Cities Fairs Cup and drew 0-0.

Liverpool had won the first leg at Anfield 2-0, thanks to goals from Daniel Sturridge and Roberto Firmino, however they couldn’t inflict further embarrassment on to United on home soil.

Having been knocked out of the semi-final of the Champions League by Chelsea the season prior, the Reds were seeking revenge.

Chelsea won the first leg at Anfield 3-1, leaving Rafael Benitez and his men with a mountain to climb in London.

It was an obstacle they nearly overcame.

Liverpool stormed into a 2-0 lead courtesy of a trademark Fabio Aurielo free-kick and a Xabi Alonso spot-kick.

The Reds had given themselves an unlikely advantage and now just needed one more goal to progress.

However, the match changed with two goals in quick succession from Didier Drogba and Alex made it 2-2 – leaving Liverpool with another uphill battle.

Frank Lampard added a third goal for the hosts but Benitez’s side refused to give in.

Late goals from Lucas Leiva and Dirk Kuyt provided a glimmer of hope but the Reds crashed out 7-5 on aggregate.

Liverpool claimed a vital away goal against Arsenal in their 2007/08 Champions League quarter-final first leg.

Emmanuel Adebayor opened the scoring for the Gunners in the 23rd minute of play, though Dirk Kuyt restored parity three minutes later.

The Reds would go on to win the return leg at Anfield 4-2, sealing a 5-3 aggregate triumph.
