Nigerian midfielder, Frank Onyeka, carved out his little piece of Premier League history by scoring the first league goal in three years for Brentford in their 2-0 win over Sheffield United on Saturday, Sunday PRIMANEWS reports.
It was also Brentford’s first victory in 10 EPL games.
The 26-year-old came on for Mathias Jensen in the 90th minute and was in the right place at the right time to poke in a flick from Kevin Schade three minutes afterward.
Onyeka’s goal was his first in four years – 1,366 days. He last scored a goal for FC Midtjylland in a 6-3 win over Nordsjaelland on July 17, 2020.
The goal spelled salvation and relief for Brentford but imminent, inescapable doom for Sheffield United who remain bottom and take another step towards an immediate return to the Championship.
The win moved the Bees up to 14th, seven points clear of the bottom three while Chris Wilder’s side is 10 points from safety with six games to play.
Onyeka has made 27 appearances across all competitions with two assists so far this season.
The Super Eagles midfielder has played 66 times for Brentford in the EPL recording 23 wins and 27 losses.
According to the Premier League, Onyeka has made 80 tackles, 47 interceptions, 46 clearances and blocked 15 shots. He has also made 190 ball recoveries winning 227 duels and lost 245.
Onyeka was Brentford’s first summer signing when he joined from FC Midtjylland in 2021 for an undisclosed fee on a five-year deal.
Brentford’s last five games in the league are against Luton (away), Everton (away), Fulham (home), Bournemouth (away) and Newcastle (home).
