Plateau United forward Albert Hilary is confident he can still catch up in the Nigeria Premier Football League golden boot race after reaching his fifth goal of the season with a hat-trick during their 5-1 win over Bayelsa United on Sunday, PRIMANEWS Sports Extra reports.
Hilary gave the Jos side a two-goal lead inside the opening 30 minutes of the encounter before completing his hat-trick on the hour mark. Before the game, he had only scored two goals against Sunshine Stars and Niger Tornadoes.
The current pace-setters in the league, Robert Mizo of Bayelsa United and Sikiru Alimi of Remo Stars both have nine goals each.
Hilary’s five goals take him level with Kano Pillars’ Yusuf Abdulahi; who scored his five goals against Gombe United, Jonathan Alukwu of Sporting Lagos and Sunshine Stars’ Michael Olalusi.
With four goals behind the leaders after match-day 14 Hilary believes he has enough time to add to his tally.
“It’s a great privilege to have scored my first hat trick in the NPFL. I’ve scored goals before and even last week but the feeling that comes with a hat-trick is special,” Hilary told PRIMANEWS Sports Extra.
“Everything is by the grace of God and I also want to take my chances. I’m actually working hard to become the highest goal scorer. I know others won’t slow down too.
“Before the start of the season, that was the objective and with five goals already, I feel I can still push it harder than I did in my previous seasons.”
The 5-1 win over bottom-rocked Bayelsa United was Plateau’s third win in a row and the Jos side, who also have an outstanding game are now fourth on the table with 22 points from 13 matches, four points adrift of leaders Remo Stars.
